Daniel Llewellyn Lewis

October 29, 1929 - November 5, 2018

Daniel Llewellyn Lewis, age 89, a proud, lifelong resident of Lorain, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018, at Mercy New Life Hospice Center in Lorain.He was born on October 29, 1929, to Llewellyn D. and Kathryn B. (nee Walker) Lewis. He was a 1947 graduate of Lorain High School, where he played hockey, baseball, and football.Daniel enlisted with the United States Army Air Corps at the age of 17. He went into active service on August 11, 1947, serving our country during World War II. He served with the 1600th AACS Squadron and as a Radio Mechanic with the 1950th AACS Squadron, stationed in Tripoli, Libya. While serving, he was the recipient of the German Occupation Medal for Berlin airlift devise. Daniel was honorably discharged on June 30, 1951.He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fenn College (now known as Cleveland State University) on June 9, 1967. He made his career as a teacher at Longfellow Jr. High School, teaching English, Literature, and History. He retired on July 1, 1988. Daniel coached basketball, football and track at Longfellow. He also coached springboard diving at the YMCA and at Carousel Swim Club. Daniel enjoyed gardening, especially tending to his roses, bowling, which he did up to the age of 89, all sports, and spending time at the lake. He loved Art, History, Literature, and Music. He was a lifelong learner and trained observer. He was a very social man and was a member of just about every club in the City of Lorain, a city that he truly loved. His family was by far his greatest love.He is survived by his daughter, Linda D. (Brad) Koller, of Thornville, OH; son, Daniel S. (Kathleen) Lewis, of Elyria, OH; grandchildren, Jen D. Koller, Becky L. (Kevin) Schmehl, Douglas, (Tera) Corlett, Sherry (Rich) Rains, Richard (Kathryn) Corlett, great-grandchildren, Vincent (Dierda) Griffin, Eden Corlett, Tyler (Tanairy) Corlett, Dakota Griffin, and Hannah Rains, Aubrey M. Schmehl, and Piper J. Schmehl; sister, Diana (Gene, deceased) Kaufman; and his brother, Jonathan J. (Amanda) Lewis. Daniel was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Arlene Marian (nee Warhola) Lewis, in 2005; and his parents, Llewellyn and Kathryn Lewis.The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, Ohio. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain, Ohio.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Daniel to Mercy New Life Hospice, 3500 Kolbe Road, Lorain, OH, or to the Rose Garden at Lakeview Park, Lorain County Metro Parks Rose Garden, 12882 Diagonal Road, LaGrange, OH 44050.Online condolences may be left for the family at:www.dovinreberjones.com.
