Dr. Joseph Sciarrotta Sr.

June 23, 1933 - December 17, 2019

Dr. Joseph Sciarrotta Sr. M.D., F.A.C.O.G., age 86 passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at Independence Village in Avon Lake, Ohio. He was born on June 23, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio to Charles and Jennie (nee Indelicato) Sciarrotta. He graduated from John Adams High School in 1951, Adelbert College of Case Western Reserve University, with his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1955 and the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in 1959. Upon his graduation from Medical School he served a Rotating Internship at St. Luke’s Hospital, in Cleveland from 1959-1960. From 1960 -1964 he served his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital. In 1964 he opened a Private Practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Lorain, which he ran for 24 years. He closed his practice in 1988. While he was practicing, he was a full-time staff member of St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain and staff member at Lorain Community Hospital. In 1988 he went on to work as a Director of Medical Research at Parke- Davis, in Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1988-1990 and then went on to finish his career in medicine as a Clinical Professor at Case Western Reserve Medical School and Senior Attending Physician and Director of the OB/GYN Clinic at Metro Health Medical Center, officially retiring in 2003. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, and American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologist, He served as President of the Lorain County Medical Society 1977-1978, and as the Chief of Staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecologist at St. Joseph Hospital from 1972-1976 and again from 1978-1982. Joseph enjoyed playing golf, fishing, traveling and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. He is survived by his wife, Janet (nee Patak); sons, John-Charles “Jay” (Jeanette) Sciarrotta, of Amherst, and Joseph (Karen) Sciarrotta Jr, of Arizona; and his grandchildren, Jason, Jacob, Jared, and Katharine. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jennie Sciarrotta; and his twin brothers, Rev. Father Lee Sciarrotta, S.M. and Rev. Father Paul Sciarrotta. The family will hold a private Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 32929 Lake Road, Avon Lake, Ohio. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, in Avon. In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions be made in memory of Joseph to the Amherst St. Joseph Catholic School Endowment Fund, 175 Saint Joseph Drive, Amherst, Ohio 44001 or to Crossroads Hospice, 9775 Rockside Road, Suite 270, Valley View, OH 44125.
