Mariano E. "Jonah" Campana

April 14, 1929 - June 2, 2018

Mariano E. “Jonah” Campana entered into eternal rest June 2, 2018, at Mercy Health New Life Hospice after a lengthy illness. Born in Lorain on April 14, 1929, to parents Mariano and Acenzia Campana, he lived in Amherst since 1955. A Lorain High School graduate of the 1947A Class, he served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951–1953. He began his forty-four year-long career at Ohio Edison in the Line Storeroom, and held multiple positions in the intervening years before retiring from Electric Sales Marketing. He served terms as President of the Twin Cities Kiwanis and the Ohio Edison Men’s Club. A member of St. Joseph Church in Amherst, he was a Eucharistic Minister. He enjoyed being president of the Amherst Band Boosters and a member of Italian American Veterans (IAV) Post #1. In retirement, he became a longtime attendee of the Kmart (now Burger King) morning coffee club. Jonah was an athlete throughout school and thereafter, playing for the Lorain City Baseball and Softball Class B championship teams, as well as the Lorain City and County Basketball teams. He coached and refereed high school baseball, and loved bowling and golfing. Of course, he was an avid fan of the Cavs, Indians and Browns. Having a lifelong affinity for the lake, he and his beloved wife, Barbara, appreciated any opportunity to catch a sunset at Lakeview and meet with friends. He enjoyed playing cards, building 3D puzzles, traveling, attending the theater and movies, but most of all being surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Ann (nee Borocz), daughters, Deborah (Mitchell) Arnold, Karen (Glenn) Leppo, Joyce (Patrick) Rogers, and grandchildren, Ian Arnold, Michael (Margaret Ann) Leppo, Andrew (Cassie) Leppo, and Emma Rose Rogers, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Agatha Scappucci, Emma Campana, Adella DeVinitz, Raymond Campana, Dominic Campana, and Alfred Campana. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 7, 2018, 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Closing prayers will be held Friday, June 8, 2018 at 9:30 A.M. in the funeral center, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Reverend Father Timothy O'Connor, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
