July 19, 1945 - January 21, 2021
Richard George “Burrhead” Shildwachter, 75 of Lorain, OH peacefully went to sleep on Thursday, January 21st, 2021. He was born July 19th, 1945 to parents George and Lillian (nee Miceli) Shildwachter. Richard was a lifelong resident of Lorain and grew up hunting and fishing by the river. He was a member of the River Rats and cherished deeply the childhood friendships that lasted the span of his life. He enjoyed passing the knowledge he learned along the river about hunting and fishing onto his children and especially his grandsons. He was also a member of The Bachelors and graduated from Admiral King in 1963. Upon graduation, Richard started working at US Steel before being drafted for the Vietnam war. He became a Sergeant in the US Army during Vietnam, and was awarded the Purple Heart as well as several other medals for marksmanship and leadership. Upon returning from the war, Richard met and married the love of his life, Mary Ann (nee Madaras) Shildwachter. He always said, “I don’t know what I did to deserve her. But I know I’ve loved her since the moment I saw her”. Richard and Mary Ann recently celebrated their 49th Wedding Anniversary. After retirement of 30 plus years from US Steel, Richard enjoyed antique and bargain hunting for the antique business, Barchard Street Uniques and Antiques, he and Mary Ann owned at Berlin Antique Mall. He could readily be found at Jamie’s Flea Market where most every vendor knew his name. He is survived by his dearest wife Mary Ann (nee Madaras); loving children Wendy (Michael) Daniels, Nancy (Darwin) Penano, Zachary (Megan Beck) Shildwachter and Abby Miller; cherished grandchildren Samuel (Stephanie) Moore, Seth and Maxwell Daniels, Jake and Joe Penano, Christopher, Morgan, and Miles Miller; beloved great granddaughters Sophie and Skylar; dear siblings Carol (Jack) West, Joan Goldstein, George (Denise) Shildwachter. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to an organization that Richard greatly benefitted from: Vet Center 6325 York Road Parma Heights, OH 44130. A private memorial service will be held by the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center.
