May 26, 1953 - February 21, 2022
Robert J. “Bob” Phelan, age 68, of Amherst, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, after a lengthy & courageous battle with cancer on Monday, February 21, 2022 at Mercy New Life Hospice. He was born on May 26, 1953 in Lorain, where he lived most of his life, and is a 1971 graduate of Admiral King High School. In 1999, he moved to Amherst. Prior to moving to Amherst, he proudly graduated with his MBA from Baldwin Wallace College in 1996. Most of Bob’s career was spent at the Jacob’s Group as Director of Information Technology, where he worked for 25 years. He finished his career with the Lorain County Department of Jobs and Family Services as MIS Manager. Bob was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church where he also enjoyed being in the choir. As a member of the choir, he was privileged to travel to Italy in 2018 and sang with invited choirs in St. Peter’s Square for a mass presided by Pope Francis. He was honored to sing two solos in Rome at the Basilica of St. Ignatius. Bob was extremely enthusiastic with anything Corvette. His affinity for them was fueled even more when he was gifted his uncle’s 1960 Corvette, which has been in the family since 1963. He was proud to be in the 2014 National Corvette Museum Caravan that traveled to Bowling Green, KY to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first launch of the Corvette. He also traveled with two fellow Corvette owners to Carlisle, PA to attend Corvettes at Carlisle, one of the largest car shows in the United States. He was a member of the Ultra Vettes Corvette Club. Bob was a phenomenal woodworker and wood carver, also being a member of the Lorain County Woodcarvers club. Mostly though, he was so proud of his family – his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and his two grandchildren, who he loved going to watch play basketball and soccer. His pride in his family was evidenced by his dedication to family genealogy, he was the keeper of the family tree. Bob was also a lover of nature, loved animals, and just being able to be outside. He enjoyed feeding the birds, and even the squirrels, right out of his hands. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Louann J. (nee Nemeth), his sons; Brad (Rachel) Phelan, of North Ridgeville & Brent (Jodi) Phelan, of Amherst, his two grandchildren; Anna & Cole, and his sister, Patricia Starman, of Lorain. He was very close with all the family, and will also be missed by his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Cecilia A. (nee Urbanski) Phelan. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 28, 2022 from 4 to 7 pm, in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst.
