Robert Ellis,

Robert Paul Ellis, Sr. 85, a life-long resident of Lorain County, died on Monday, June 7, 2010, surrounded by his family at his home in Lorain. Mr. Ellis was born on Aug. 18, 1924 in Lorain, the second of six children of the late Florence and Paul B. Ellis. He grew up in South Lorain and graduated from Lorain High School, Class of 1942B. A few months after graduation, Mr. Ellis joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946. He was a pharmacist mate, 3rd Class, and also played trumpet in the Navy band aboard various ships. He was aboard the USS Joseph T. Dickman at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion in World War II. After serving in both in the Atlantic and Pacific war theaters, Mr. Ellis studied at Princeton University in a naval officers training program. After the war, Mr. Ellis returned to Lorain and was “set up” on a blind date with the former Beatrice C. Lechner. They became inseparable and were married on Feb. 12, 1949 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year. In 1950, he graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College with a degree in economics. He was employed as a supervisor at the former U.S. Steel Corp., Lorain Works, until his retirement in 1973. From 1973 to 1988, he was employed as a corrections officer for the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department. Mr. Ellis lived in Lorain nearly all his life. Until this past season, he and his wife had spent their winters in Englewood, Florida, 15 years in all. He enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to classical and Big Band music, taking trips to Las Vegas and Biloxi, Mississippi, participating in family reunions and socializing and playing cards with friends. He was especially proficient in bridge. He was also a fan of the Cleveland sports teams. In his years at Lorain High School, he played the baritone and trumpet, and was regularly excused from class to play “Taps” whenever a military veteran was buried in the city. Mr. Ellis was a longtime parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Lorain, joining soon after converting to Catholicism in 1951 and moving to the east side of Lorain. Besides his wife, Beatrice, Mr. Ellis is survived by sons, Robert P. Jr. (Florence) of Lorain; Mark A. (Janice) of Mt. Vernon; John M. (Debby) of Sykesville, MD; Joseph M. of Elyria; daughters Andrea Ellis (Glenwood Boatman) of Toledo and Mary Ellis (David L. Spigiel) of Lorain; 13 grandchildren: Marly R. Ellis, Tara Y. Fitzpatrick (Michael C.), Brooke H. Ellis, Joshua T. Ellis, Joseph S. Ellis, Robert Y. Ellis, Michael A. Ellis, Jocelyn E. Ellis, Lena B. Ellis-Boatman, Andrew D. Ellis, Steven J. Boatman, Martin Y. Ellis and Christian Y. Ellis; two step-grandchildren, Leonard J. Spigiel II and Ali M. Spigiel; one great-granddaughter, India Lily Fitzpatrick; brothers James of Englewood, FL and Paul W., of Vermilion and Englewood, FL; sister, Virginia Findley, of Lorain, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence (Pfeiffer) and Paul B. Ellis, and sisters, Marjorie Beres and Florence McVey. The Ellis family will receive friends on Friday, June 11, 2010 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 11:15 a.m. in the funeral center followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Lorain. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. Family suggest contributions be made to the Michael Thomas Scholarship Fund or the Capital Campaign Fund, both of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain, Oh. 44053.
