Charles Louis Covault

Charles L. Covault, 91, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Ames Family Hospice Hope in Westlake. He died four days shy of his 92nd. Birthday on January 15th. He was born in Lorain. He attended the Culver Military Academy and the Lorain Public Schools graduating in the Class of 1943-A. He was in Music and a School Aid. However, his lifelong passion for music started when he was in choir. After serving 3 years in the US Army Air Corps from 1943-1946, he was honorably discharged. He attended Kent State University where he received a B.S., Business Administration and Minors in Advertising and Traffic Management, in 1949. He worked for National Tube, Personal Finance and the Covault & Brobst Insurance Co. in Lorain before moving to California. His postal service career began as a letter carrier in Laguna Beach and ended with his retirement as Postmaster of the El Centro Post Office in 1987. His first postal job started in 1942 when he drove the unheated green postal delivery truck delivering Christmas gifts. His postal career had assignments at the Washington DC Headquarters, the Bethesda, MD Postal Service Management Academy, NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago, Memphis and LA. He toured postal offices in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Hawaii. Charles was active in service and community organizations serving as both member and officer or Board member of the Lorain Junior Chamber of Commerce, 20-30 Club, Lorain Jaycees, Laguna Bed Feather Drive, Laguna Beach BPOE, El Centro Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary International. Living in California afforded him the opportunity to enjoy the sun and beaches of the “California Dreaming” life, the Laguna Beach Summer Theatre, the Festival of Arts, and the Pageant of the Masters. Besides his passion for the performing arts, he enjoyed traveling to Canada, Mexico, Egypt, and Italy. And then there was food-growing it, preparing, and eating it with friends and family. His grape and fig gardening stretched to ornamentals, roses, in particular, as long as they were orange, his favorite colo. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Esther (nee Schoenberger) Covault; and three wives, Adelle Nemeth, Catherine Haddad, and Mary Ann Faulk. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Jane Lovell, of Tucson, AZ and Barbara Ellis, of Fort Collins, CO; a daughter, Esta Baker, of Baltimore, MD; a niece, Sheryl Pope, of Ft. Collins, CO; nephew, Douglas Ellis, of Shawnee, KS and their children and grandchildren, a cousin, Esther Jo Spechalske, of Lodi, OH; a stepson, Denny Payne, of Amherst, OH; and four Faulk stepdaughters and their children. A celebration of Charles’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral &Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Bart Gonzalez, Director of the Church of the Open Door Lorain Campus, will be officiating. Inurnment at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Lakeview Park Historical Rose Garden, Lorain County Metroparks, or the Lorain Lighthouse Foundation.
