Ethel Grace Moyers

Ethel Grace Moyers (nee Jones), 79, passed away April 26, 2021 at Mercy Hospital, Lorain after complications from COVID-19. Born October 5, 1941, she grew up on a farm in Paris Township, Portage County, and graduated from Southeast High School where she received the first Citizenship Award. Ethel earned a degree in Education from Ashland University and taught in the Akron City and Vermilion public schools. On a beautiful June day in 1965, she married Gerald (Jerry) Moyers. Together they raised a son, Kenneth, of Amherst, and a daughter, Melanie (Mike) Abshire, of Brunswick. A special joy was attending the activities of her twin grandchildren, Kyle and Kourtney Abshire. Ethel was proud of her Welsh heritage and was a member of the Portage County Genealogical Society. She traced her roots and subsequently was inducted into the county’s First Settler’s organization. Locally, she was a member of the Amherst Historical Society. She loved to write, and at age 50, was hired as a correspondent for the Morning Journal. Her mini career as a journalist, writing news stories and features, lasted 20 years. Ethel was a devout Christian and was a charter member of Heritage Presbyterian Church. She formerly belonged to Northminster Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school, was an ordained elder, and served as Stated Clerk of Session. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and held dual memberships at Leading Star, Chapter 79, Newton Falls and Queen City Chapter 66 of Lorain. Ethel advocated volunteer work and found fulfillment in her membership in Amherst Women’s League where she served as President. At age 5, Ethel started collecting paper napkins and accumulated hundreds from family gatherings, club meetings, and weddings. She presented a program to organizations, “A Napkin is a Memory.” She was honored to be selected to become one of film director Mika Johnson’s documentary subjects for his Amerikan series and “Napkin Tales” was produced to spotlight her hobby. Ethel loved pretty things and enjoyed shopping for a bargain to decorate her home and table tops. She also liked watching the Cleveland Browns, Cavs, and Indians and Ohio State Buckeyes. She treasured the friendships of her friends Karlene, Ginny, Linda, Phyllis, Sandy, Earlene, Daralyn, Ruth, Jeanette, Pat, and Twila. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald in 1995, her parents, Reed and Elva Jones, stepfather, Wendell Evans, and brother and sister-in-law Robert and Ann Jones. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 30, 2021 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 515 N. Leavitt Road, Amherst, Ohio where funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Jenni Walker-Noyes officiating. Private family interment will take place at Hawley Cemetery, Paris Township, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Heritage Presbyterian Church.
