Arthur "Art" D. Mead's Obituary
Arthur D. “Art” Mead Sr., 72, of Lorain, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at West bay Center, Westlake following a 5 month illness.
Born August 16, 1943 in Lorain, he lived in Lorain his entire life. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1961, and then served in the United States Air Force.
Art worked as a clerk for the United States Postal Service in Lorain for over 47 years, retiring in 2008. He was the recipient of the “Most Outstanding Clerk” award.
He was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Elyria. Art started volunteering in 1965 for the Lorain County Chapter of the American Red Cross where he served as longtime chairman of the Lorain County Disaster Program. He received many awards for his service with the Red Cross including the Clara Barton Award, All Ohio Everyday Hero Award and The Red Cross Life Saving Medal of Honor. Art dedicated his life to the Red Cross, having missed many anniversaries, birthdays, family events and Holidays due to his allegiance and desire to help others. Of the 26 programs within the Red Cross, Art was involved with 21 of them. He was a teacher, mentor and friend to all.
Up until his death, Art was working with EMS to help start a program to feed the first responders of Lorain County Community Emergency Response Team. He also served on the national assessments covering the entire United States from earthquakes in California to hurricane Andrea and tornados in Niles and Hubbard, Ohio. He also taught first aid, disaster courses.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Art is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ellen (nee Horinek); a son, Arthur D. (Jennifer) Mead II of Elyria Township; daughter, Nicole Maria Mead (William Deptowicz) of Sheffield Lake; grandchildren, Arthur Thomas Mead, Travis David Mead and Olivia Dawn Mead.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur M. and Francese L. (nee Feldman) Mead; and a brother, Phillip Mead.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 2:00 - 6:00 pm and Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 pm in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11:00 am in the funeral center. Rev. Chris Lelonde, pastor of Cornerstone United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 will conduct military honors.
In honoring Art’s final wishes, all first responders attending his visitation and funeral may choose to wear their uniforms of class A’s or wear red, white and blue.
