Baldo Campana's Obituary
Baldo (Ubaldo) Campana 90 years old passed away peacefully at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain on Friday April 24th 2015.
He was born January 1st 1925 in Lorain where he lived his entire life.
On August 24th 1946 he married his loving and devoted Mary (Cambria). Baldo and Mary raised five children, Tom, Jim, Joe, Carol and Cindy. In 2014 they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
Baldo graduated from Lorain High School in 1943. He served in WWII from 1943 to 1946 in the US Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant stationed in Italy and India as a Medical and Surgical Technician.
Baldo along with his wife Mary, who was his office manager and book keeper, started Baldo Campana Concrete in 1956 until his retirement in 1990. The legacy proudly continued with his son Jim until 2014. All over Lorain County and adjacent areas the Campana Concrete name is proudly stamped in the concrete.
Baldo was a man with many talents and was good at everything he put his hands on. He attended the Cleveland Art Institute, and was an accomplished artist. He continued art his entire life from portraits to signage and murals for his children’s many businesses.
He was a member of Oak Hills Country Club in Lorain. Baldo was an exceptional golfer and in 1960 he got a hole in one. But Baldo was most known in Lorain for his bowling. He loved bowling and teaching the game. There are not many 30 to 50 year old bowlers in Lorain that haven't had a suggestion or pointer who he encouraged to help improve their game. He became a member of the Professional Bowlers Association in 1983. He has one sanctioned 300 game as well as over 2 dozen unsanctioned 300 games and countless 289 and 299 games. He was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1984, Lorain Bowling Hall of Fame in 1980 and Ohio Bowling Council of Fame in 1992. He would wear one of his many bowling rings with his 823 series ring being one he was most proud of.
In 2005 his children and grandchildren started an annual bowling tournament in honor of his 80th birthday. The "Baldo Bash" bowling tournament held each year on New Year’s Day attracts 300 bowlers at Rebman’s Recreation for a fun filled day of bowling, prizes and friendship.
Baldo was extremely proud of his Italian heritage. In October 2014 he was honored by the Italian American Veterans’ as an Italian Business man of the year. He was lifelong member of the IAV, Elks, DAV and Amvets.
Above all and most importantly Baldo loved the time he spent with his wife, children and family.
