Basil Oren Moore Jr.'s Obituary
Basil Oren Moore, Jr., age 87, of Amherst, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2023. He was born on November 23, 1935 in Boyne City, MI to Basil Oren, Sr., and Helen Virginia (nee Ruperd) Moore.
Shortly after Oren graduated high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy so he could serve his beloved country from 1954 until 1958. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he then began his long-time career serving his country while in the United States Army. Oren remained on active duty until the 1970’s, at which point he joined the reserves and on the civilian arena as Director of Safety and Security. He held this part of his career until officially retiring from the military in 1995. Through his many years serving his country, Oren was stationed in Germany at one time where he eventually met and married his beloved wife, Ursula “Ulla” (nee Grabmayer). Once married, they moved to the States in 1970, where they made Lansing, MI their home. Finally, they moved to Amherst, OH in 1990, where they lived ever since.
Oren was proud of his membership in the Masonic Lodges (raised in Polar Star and recently Blue Steel) and Commandery where he was Past Commander among many other offices. He was even prouder of being recognized for his 50 years of membership. He was also honored to be a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, this entailed meticulous work of tracing his ancestry all the way back to the American Revolutionary War. Oren’s hobbies included travel, film and digital photography, and genealogy. He was an avid reader who enjoyed Westerns as well as historical fiction and non-fiction. Cribbage was his favorite card game and he enjoyed playing a game or two with anyone who had time, more recently on-line with his sons. He enjoyed time with his family.
Oren is survived by his son, Stephen (Kelly) Moore, of Walled Lake, MI, from his second marriage, as well as Brian (Marj) Moore, of New Hartford, NY, and daughter, Jori (Kent) Coster, of Midland, MI, from his first marriage (Virginia nee Babcock), a granddaughter, Courtney Coster-Black (Jim Roche) and three great-grandchildren, Dan, Rayne, and Grace.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ursula M. “Ulla” (nee Grabmayer) Moore, father, Basil Oren Moore Sr., his step-father and mother, Forrest and Helen (nee Ruperd) Harmon, and grandson Brian Coster.
