Carmen Lydia Longo's Obituary
Carmen Lydia Longo, 88 of Lorain passed peacefully in her sleep Friday, January 13, 2023. She was born February 2, 1934 in Comerio, Puerto Rico to Jose M. Longo and Eduarda Rivera.
In 1953, she arrived in Lorain, Ohio. Obtaining a beautician license she was able
to own and operate her own beauty shop from her home while raising her children. Once her children were older, she wanted to further her education. Attending Lorain Community College and graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1979 she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Bilingual Education. Her love for learning persuaded her to continue her education at the University of Findley where she received her Master’s Degree. Employed by Lorain City Schools she taught at Lincoln, Whittier, Meister and Masson Schools until she retired in 2000. Lydia loved learning/teaching, shopping (especially for good deals), gardening (her flowers and yard always looked beautiful), music (she would dance anywhere), and cooking (anyone that visited her home never left hungry). She was a warm hearted, independent, and hardworking, a strong role model and loving mother, grandmother, Tía and a giving friend.
She will be deeply missed by her children Orlando Melendez, Cleveland and Viv Davis, Atlanta, along with her grandchildren Amanda Avalos, Lorain; Michael Ruiz, Elyria; Melanie Davis, Atlanta; Eva Rose, Lakewood; and Nikki, Cleveland. She had 5 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. She is survived by her brothers Jose Berrios and Juan Berrios Jr. of Florida.
Lydia was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Roberts, her parents, Juan Berrios Sr. who raised her, her brothers Pedro Longo, Alberto Berrios, Rafael Berrios, Eduardo Berrios, and sister Maria Flores.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. The family will receive friends again on Friday, January 20th. from 8:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave., Lorain. Rev. Father William Thaden, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
