As her grandson, my childhood is filled with many fond memories of Grandma Brewer.
The day she was Baptized at Broadway Assembly, the countless Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners she devotedly prepared and served, the numerous Saturday Night sleepovers with fresh baked Chocolate Chip Cookies & Milk followed by Sunday morning biscuits and gravy breakfasts before Sunday School. I remember how she sang and hummed gospel hymns when doing ‘the wash,’ Texas Sheet Cakes, Blueberry and Peach Cobblers made from scratch, canning vegetables from her and grandpa’s large garden and making her famous Strawberry Jelly.
I remember how she went to the Beauty Shop once a week to have hair done and how she bounced the grandkids upon her knee singing “trot- trot-trot to Grandma’s house…” And how she got a switch (thin tree limb) and spanked us for misbehaving because she loved us.
I remembered how she took care of my Uncle Don when a farm tractor flipped over upon him, how she rescued my Aunt Elaine when she fainted in her soup, and how well she cared for me when my jaw was broken and gave me a place to live while I healed. This only scratches the surface of the many wonderful memories I have.
But it is how she lived her life as a Christian that I remember most.
From the day she was saved Grandma lived her life as a living testimony. Her home was Heaven on Earth with a sweet peaceful spirit, exceptionally clean and holy. She faithfully served in the Helps Ministry as a nursery volunteer, Sunday school teacher, cook and rarely missed Church service if ever. Grandma’s life exemplified the Christian lifestyle remarkably.
Now she is with the Lord, reunited with my Grandfather, her mother "Granny," siblings and all those who have gone before us. For this reason I am happy today. Why? Because grandma has entered eternal life with a crown of glory and I’m absolutely 100% certain that we’ll see her again.
We love you Grandma!
