David Frank Ostang's Obituary
David Frank Ostang, age 54, formerly of Lorain, passed away in Texas on Monday, March 2, 2015.
Dave was born May 17, 1960, in Lorain, Ohio, to Shirley and Albert Ostang. After graduating from Lorain High, he served his country in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics and upon graduation worked for AirCal as an aircraft mechanic. He then continued his 30-year career with American Airlines, working the D Terminal International crew and then the hangar taxi crew.
Dave was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America serving as the committee chairman of the Troop 7 Council, as well as a troop leader and mentor. Dave loved helping others and did so by serving in various organizations, including Care Corps, Beautiful Feet Ministries and the Snowball Express.
Dave was devoted to his Catholic faith and served as a lector, a teacher of Children's Liturgy of the Word, and an RCIA sponsor at St. Francis Church in Grapevine, TX. Dave was a fourth-degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 7099 and Color Corps Commander of Assembly 3476. As a Knight, he participated in the Knights on Bikes, Lenten Fish Fries, pancake breakfasts, the American Wheelchair Mission and Blessing of the Vines, as well as other activities.
Dave was a loving husband, devoted father and a loyal friend. He had a passion for life that was contagious. No matter what life dealt him, he always had optimistic thoughts. His hobbies included motorcycle riding, traveling, astronomy, camping, hiking, concerts and enjoying new food experiences.
Dave was a sports enthusiast, especially for his hometown Cleveland teams. While he always enjoyed watching his Indians and "adopted" Rangers, he got more joy from coaching and playing. When he played on his adult baseball team, the NABA Phillies, they won two world championships. He had so much trivia knowledge and truly loved everything about the sport.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 17 years, Shelly; his son, Mitchell; brother, Larry (Elaine) of Lorain, Ohio; nephew, Nicholas (Diane); niece, Brittney Ditzler (Reid); three great-nieces; and one great-nephew.
His mother, Shirley; his father, Albert; and a brother, Jeffery, preceded Dave in death.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 9th from 3:30 -7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst.
