Diodoro M. "Dino" Contreras' Obituary
Diodoro M. “Dino” Contreras, age 88, of Sheffield Lake, passed away peacefully at Amherst Manor on Friday, November 11, 2022.
He was born on September 11, 1934 in Iriga, Camarines Sur, Philippines to Graciano and Isabella (nee Marpuri) Contreras. Dino began his military career in 1953, serving in the United States Navy. During his time in service, he obtained the rank of Chief Petty Officer and was a veteran of the Korean War. His long naval career took him to every corner of the globe and sailed in every ocean where he continued to carry out many responsibilities and duties throughout his career.
Upon retiring from active duty in 1974, Dino moved to Lorain and then to Sheffield Lake in 1976 where he and his wife, Lynarda “Midge” (nee Davidson) Contreras Midge raised their 5 children. He established, owned, and operated his store, Wheel & Reel, in Lorain, from 1976 until 1994. He became a cornerstone in the Lorain fishing community, and he loved everything and anything having to do with fishing and Lake Erie. He could be found almost every Sunday on the lake searching for perch and walleye. He also enjoyed being part of the Lorain Wheelman Bicycle Club and a member of the VFW Post #8686 in Sheffield Lake.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lynarda “Midge” (nee Davidson) Contreras; his children, Danilo, Joseph, Rebecca, Andrew, and Michael; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and his sister, Meriam Nacario.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Eddie and Edgar and his sister Helen Nacario.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 25th, 2022 from 5 – 7 pm in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Full military honors will be conducted at 7:00 pm, immediately following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a donation be made to “Toys for Tots” in his name. It was his favorite charity and Dino was always supportive and volunteered with Toys for Tots over the years.
