Dominic J. Zelnik's Obituary
Dominic J. Zelnik, age 89, of Lorain, passed away after a brief illness, on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the Cleveland Clinic.
He was born on September 26, 1927 in Lorain, where he lived his entire life, and was a 1946 graduate of Lorain High School. After High School, he enlisted and proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II, as well as the Korean War. In 1947, he went on an expedition to the South Pole with Admiral Byrd. Later in life, he was lucky enough to travel with his son on a work trip, to the North Pole.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Dominic went to work for US Steel for a few years before going to work for Ford Motor Company, Lorain, where he retired from. He is a member of the Church of St. Peter, and the American Legion Post 30.
Dominic’s family always came first to him. He also always enjoyed traveling many places with family, and after retirement, with his wife.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 68 years, Phyllis (nee Paskey), his beloved children; James (Glenda) Zelnik, Audrey Toothman, and Melinda (Gordon) Hamilton, and his 6 cherished grandchildren; Dominic (Jessica), Jessica (Ryan), Geoffrey, Lindsey, Jennifer (Marcelo), and David.
Dominic was preceded in death by his parents; Dominic and Anna (nee Mihalik) Zelnik, his brothers; Valentine, Robert, Charles, Michael, Ronald, and Richard, and his sisters; Eleanor and Elizabeth.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 9th, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, Amherst, where prayers will be held at 7:45 pm. His Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday, June10th, at 9:30 am. The Rev. Fr. Craig Hovanec, Pastor, will officiate. Burial with full military honors, will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
