Donald B. Lyons' Obituary
Donald B. “Pop-Pop” Lyons, age 96, of Sheffield Lake, passed away at Mercy New Life Hospice, Lorain, on Wednesday, March 29th, 2023.
He was born on February 1, 1927 in Gladesville, W. VA to Ross and Mildred (nee Sinclair) Lyons. In 1945, Don graduated from Arthurdale High School, where he excelled in their different sports teams. Soon after high school graduation he went on to serve his beloved country for the United States Navy. During his term served, he was in the 143rd Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) and was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, as well as the Pacific Theater Ribbon. By the time of his honorable discharge, he earned the rank and classification of Seaman First Class USNR. While serving, one of the places he was stationed was on Samar Island in the Philippines. After his honorable discharge, Donald eventually moved to Sheffield Lake in 1963, and began working for the Lake Terminal Railroad. After being employed there he eventually went on to work for General Motors, where by the time of his retirement he held the position of a tow motor operator.
Donald is a life member of the Elyria VFW Post 1079 and enjoyed hunting, fishing and anything to do with sports. He also liked keeping his mind sharp by working on his daily “brain teasers” and playing the occasional game of Hearts.
He is survived by his sons Don (Chris), of Wakeman and Glen (Trina), of Penfield; 3 grandchildren Heather, Amber, and Samantha; his great grandson Nicolas; and a brother Raymond (Evelyn), of Sheffield Twp.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma (nee Roupe), his parents, and his brothers and sister.
