Dorian "Doug" Taylor's Obituary
Dorian “Doug” Taylor, age 72, of Amherst, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 11, 2021, at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain.
He was born on August 3, 1948 in Terra Alta, W. VA to Orian Jehu and Nellie Catherine Taylor. He is a 1966 graduate of Masontown Valley High School, where he was a two-time selection to their All State football team. He began his college education at Fairmount State College until he was drafted into the Army in 1967. Doug also met his sweetheart, Emma Jean McAtee on August 28, 1967 and then married her on December 28, 1968. He worked for Consolidated Freightways for 32 years and Grobe Fruit Farm for 18 years as a truck driver.
Doug’s great passion was being a member of the American Legion in Amherst, where he was a member since 1988. He held the position of Post Commander 3 times, county Commander once, and District 5 Commander for 4 years. He was also a member of the Amvets in Elyria, Post 32, where he was also a past Commander, as well as the State Horseshoe pitching champion in 2009. Doug was a member of the Amherst VFW and the Eagles in Elyria. He was a proud member of the NRA and the United States Bowling Congress, winning 10 national tournaments. He was a finance officer for the Sons of the Legion in Amherst and a correspondent for the Lorain 40/8 Voitures Club. He was a registered umpire in the ASA and Hotstove little league baseball. He played softball for many years and was a director of the Amherst 35+ softball league. Doug was an avid deer hunter and even owned a campground with his two best friends, Chuck and Bill, where they would stay for their hunting trips. Doug was a die-hard Steelers fan and enjoyed watching football games with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Emma Jean (nee McAtee), his son, James (Kelly) Taylor, of N. Ridgeville, his daughter, Michelle (Jeff) Taylor, of Amherst, his 4 grandchildren; Justin, Dillon, Jeffrey, and Kieley, and his siblings; Patricia Cummings, of IN, Barbara Turner, of W. VA, Linda Hovatter, of W. VA, and Debra Murray, of W. VA.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa in 2003, and his parents.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 19th, from 3:00 pm until the time of his funeral services at 6:00 pm., at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. His burial will be on Wednesday, the 20th, at 10:30 am at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, OH. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will be conducting his military honors service. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
