Edward Stempowski's Obituary
Edward Adam Stempowski, age 88, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Oak Hills Nursing Center in Lorain where he has resided the past 5 years.
Edward was born January 2, 1924 in Lorain, Ohio to Anthony and Rose Stempowski. He attended Catholic Grade School at Nativity BVM Church in Lorain, where he was an altar boy. He graduated from Lorain High School where he met his future wife Beverly Jane Nau. They were married at Camp Ritchie, MD in 1941 and subsequently raised 11 children in Amherst, OH.
He proudly served in the United States Army as a master sergeant and cartographer in Europe during World War II. He was part of the Normandy invasion and was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts in securing the surrender of many Polish speaking German soldiers using his Polish language skills and his persuasive voice. He was a member of VFW Post 1662.
Most of his life he worked as a finish carpenter and built his own home in Amherst. Edward enjoyed travel, nature, big band music and good food.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly in 1988. He is survived by 11 children: Edward (Sharon "Sue") of Vermilion OH, Kenneth (Mary) of Elizabeth WV, Gregory (Mary), of Amherst OH, Douglas (Charlotte) of Flower Mound TX, Jeffery (Marti), Of Lorain OH, Cynthia (Paul) Miller of Amherst OH, Bryan (Quinna), of Holly Springs NC, Melanie (David Arters), of Solon OH, Camille (Michael Fuhrman), of Seattle WA, Mark (Cherie), of Amherst OH and Monique(Richard) Broz, of Lorain OH and one sister Florence (Steve) Caruso, of Campbell, CA and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
His family would like to thank the staff at Oak Hills for their loving support and care of their father for over the past 5 years.
The Stempowski Family will receive friends on Friday, September 7, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral center, followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Private inurnment for the family will take place at a later date in Calvary Cemetery.
