Elizabeth M. "Betty" James' Obituary
Elizabeth M. “Betty” James (nee Fisher), age 89, of Lorain, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 while under the care of Mercy New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph at Kingston of Vermilion.
She was born on February 14, 1928 in Lorain, where she lived most of her life and is a graduate of Lorain High School. Betty retired from Lorain City Schools, where she worked in the cafeteria. Earlier in her working life, she was a key punch operator for the Florida State Board of Nursing. In between jobs though, she chose to concentrate on raising her family, being a good wife and loving mother.
Betty was originally a long-time member of St. Joseph Church, in Lorain, where she also was a Eucharistic minister. After St. Joseph closed, she became a member of St. Mary Parish in Lorain.
She really enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the Casinos. She was always lucky with 50/50 raffles, slot machines, or anything she was able to play or gamble. Betty also enjoyed a good book, especially her favorite murder/mystery themes.
She will be dearly missed by her sons; Jay (Jean) James, of El Cajon, CA, and Matthew, of Los Angeles, CA, daughters; Lynette (Kirk) Fitch and Karen (Thomas) Jacops, both of Lorain, grandchildren; Todd (Amy) Jacops, Amy (Robert) Jacops-Steele, Craig (Lisa) Fitch, Andrea Fitch, and Andrew James, 3 great grandchildren; Max, Emma, and Hitch, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Arthur J. James, in January 2016, parents, Joseph and Hildagarde (nee Devlin) Fisher, sisters; Leonarda A. Smith, Hildagarde Hazen, and Magdeline Eiden, and her brothers; Joseph “Bud” Fisher and Edward Fisher.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 7, from 4 – 8 pm, at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm. Closing prayers will be held on Tuesday, at 9:30 am, in the funeral center, with her Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 am, at St. Mary Parish, West 8th Street and Reid Avenue, Lorain. Fr. Daniel O. Divis, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
