Emily A. Binder's Obituary
Emily A. "Emmy" Binder (nee Sojka), age 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at Mercy New Life Hospice Center after a brief illness. Born on August 4, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, Emily grew up in the city and graduated from West Tech High School in 1960.
Emily met the love of her life, James, and the two were married shortly after. They initially settled in Avon Lake before building and moving into their dream home in Sheffield Lake, where they lived and raised their family for many years.
Right after high school, Emily began her career at Standard Oil. However, she soon shifted her focus to raising her children, dedicating herself to their upbringing until they reached school age. At that point, she began working for the Sheffield Lake school system, starting as a recess monitor. Over the years, Emily held various fulfilling positions, ultimately dedicating many years to the school before retiring.
Emily was an active member of the Red Hat Society, and she relished being involved in her children’s lives and their many school activities. From being a Girl Scout Brownie troop leader for her daughter to being a devoted PTA member and room mother, she cherished her role as a mother and community member.
Her love for her family extended to her hobbies, such as crocheting beautiful blankets, which she lovingly gifted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had a passion for gambling, collecting and selling antiques, and staying active. In her younger years, Emily enjoyed playing racquetball, tennis, and bowling.
Emily’s warmth, kindness, and dedication to her family and community will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, James (Tracy), of Amherst, Timothy, of Sheffield Lake and Wendy (Daniel) Deidrick, of Woodruff, SC; grandchildren, Alexandria, Savannah, Sidney, Madison, Austin, Shana, Brandon & Jenna; and her beloved 9 great grandchildren. Emily was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, James A. “Jim” Binder in 2004 as well as her parents, Joseph & Ruth (nee Burmeister) Sojka.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 4 -7 pm at Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst.
