Evelyn M. Donovan's Obituary
Evelyn Margaret Donovan, of Lorain, passed away Thursday, August 3rd, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 9, 1943 in Chatham, Kent, England to David and Elizabeth (nee Eden) Nicol. She was raised in Edinburgh, Scotland and was fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage. She then emigrated to Toronto, Canada as a teen.
Evelyn married Jerry Donovan in 1964, and the couple moved to the Lorain area in 1965, where they raised their six children. She was a fantastic bookkeeper, brilliant with crosswords, an accomplished seamstress and beautiful knitter. She was also an incredibly talented ice skater winning many competitions in Scotland. She skillfully managed her husband’s union campaigns, and loved to travel—whether it was visiting family in Canada, back to Scotland and Ireland, or the coast of New England.
Evelyn was proudest of her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Jerry Donovan; her children Mary (Tom) Springowski, Paul (Tracy) Donovan, Michael (Carol) Donovan, Coleen Donovan (John Redinger), and Gabrielle Donovan (Rodney Gillen); her 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her dear brother David (Maureen) Nicol and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her is her beloved son, Sean, parents Dave and Betty (nee Eden) Nicol, many sisters-in-law and their husbands. They’ll be waiting with open arms to welcome her home. O Flower of Scotland, when will we see your like again?
The family wishes to express their sincerest thanks to all the medical staff at Mercy Hospital and New Life Hospice for their wonderful and attentive care.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 from 3 – 8 pm in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Friends will also be received at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1305 E. Erie Avenue, Lorain, on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Rev. Fr. Edward J. Smith, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. To send an online condolence, please visit www.dovinandreberjones.com.
