George Evanoff's Obituary
George Evanoff, age 90, of Lorain, died Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Amherst Manor following a brief illness.Born March 14, 1933, in Canton, he lived in Lorain, graduating from Lorain High School in 1951. George entered the United States Coast Guard, serving during the Korean War the following year. He was honorably discharged in 1955.Geroge bravely served the citizens of Lorain as a fireman with the Lorain Fire Department for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Saints Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church, Lorain Professional Firefighters Union Local 267, Veterans of Foreign War Post 451, and the American Legion Post 30.An avid gardener growing tomatoes and peppers, George loved to share his bounty with family and friends. He enjoyed reading, music, traveling, and gathering with his family.Surviving are his daughters, Becky (Tom) Machnik of Strongsville and Nancy Strader (David Horning) of Lorain; grandchildren, John (Abigail Morton), Joseph Mackenzie, and Tony (faience Katie Banchek); and great-grandchildren, Ruby and Paxton.He was preceded in death by his wife, Menka (nee Kolevich) Evanoff, in 1985; parents, Paul and Mary Evanoff; sister, Helen Caruloff; and his companion of 20 years, Leila Davis, in 2010.The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a Trisagion service starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Dovin & Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper foster Park Rd, Amherst. Funeral services will be on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Saints Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church, 3056 Reeves Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Paul G. Monkowski, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
