Helen L. Jaworski's Obituary
Helen L. Jaworski (nee Sakowski), age 89, of Amherst passed away Monday, December 1, 2014 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph.
Helen was born on April 17, 1925 in Lorain, Ohio to Peter and Agnes Sakowski. She attended grade school at Nativity BVM School and was a 1943 B class graduate of Lorain High School.
In her early years, Helen was a secretary at National Tube in Lorain upon leaving National Tube she went on to work as a cashier at the Pick-N—Pay Grocery Store, retiring in 1987 after 25 years of service. After her retirement she volunteered at Amherst Hospital and would also crochet baby hats for the newborns.
Beginning in high school and for many years following, Helen was a member of a women’s club called the Pic Wic’s. She was a member of the Amherst Democratic Women’s Club and served also served in the position of President. She was also very active with the city of Amherst as the “First Lady” while her husband, John served as the Mayor of Amherst from 1984-1996. She was supportive of several charities, especially those involving children.
Helen met her husband John in the first grade. They began dating as teens and were married in 1948 when John returned from the WW II. They celebrated 66 years of marriage on May 12, 2014.
She was a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother and enjoyed preparing Sunday family meals. A special treat was the annual Easter Egg Hunt that was held in the backyard with baskets each Easter.
Helen is survived by her husband, John C. Jaworski Jr.; daughters, Kathy (Jim) Rothman-Gragel, of Sagamore Hills and Cynthia (Tim) Manning, of Amherst; grandchildren, Jason (Stephanie) Rothman, of Avon, Jackie Rothman, of Perry Twp., Todd (Elisha) Rothman, of North Olmsted, Matthew Poprocki, of Lakewood, Stephen (Hyeri) Poprocki, of Ithaca, NY, Chad (Tanya) Poprocki, of Apex, NC and Gretchen (Garrett) Miller, of Elyria; and great-grandchildren, Andrew, Ryan, Lillian, Ava, Isaac, Reaghan and Landen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Agnes Sakowski; and her siblings, Julie (George) Dabrowski, Jennie (John) Witkowski, Josie (Robert) Popa, Leona Sakowski, Edward (Micki) Sakowski and Leo (Rita) Sakowski.
The Jaworski family will receive friends on Thursday, Decemeber 4, 2014 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held on Friday, Dec. 5th. at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral center followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
