Hershel Akers' Obituary
Hershel Akers, age 81, of Lorain, passed away at his home after a lengthy illness, on Friday, April 8, 2016.
Hershel was born on April 15, 1934 in Grethel, KY and at the age of 18, moved to Lorain where he lived the rest of his life. Hershel, also known as “Bear” to his co-workers, was employed at Ford Motor Co., Lorain Assembly Plant, for 30 years, where he retired from in 1989. While employed there, he worked in the spray booth as a sprayer as well as in the maintenance department. Prior to working at Ford, he worked for Falbo Construction Company, as a concrete driver. After retirement, he worked for a short time at Ridge Hill Memorial Park as a gatekeeper. Being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, Hershel truly enjoyed his time spent visiting with his family and friends. He also loved his wife’s cooking, as he always commented about how nobody’s cooking was as good as hers. He enjoyed his garden, hunting, and going fishing.
Hershel is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Ann M. (nee Savastuk) Akers, his children; Alicia (Paul) Kleinfelter, of Kenton, OH, Marisa Akers, of Lorain, and Mark Akers, of Amherst Twp., his 7 grandchildren; Ryan Kleinfelter, of Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Alyson (Thomas) Coleman, of Boydton, VA, Sean Kleinfelter, of Houston, TX, Alexandra (Ken Saunders) Frederick, of Lorain, Rebekah Akers, of Murrieta, CA, Michael Akers, of Amherst Twp., and Jordan Akers, of Lorain, 2 great grandchildren; Clifton Coleman and Levi Hershel Saunders, with another 2 great grandchildren expected in a few months, his brother, Charles (Vernice) Akers, of Vermilion, sisters; Jurlene Hall, of Collins, OH, Shirley (Johnny) Hamilton, of Banner, KY, and Janice (Bill) Conners, of Vermilion, his brother-in-law, Alex Savastuk, of Lorain, and his faithful and beloved dog, “Dallas.”
He is preceded in death by his parents; Berry and Lexie (nee Hall) Akers, and his brothers; Buddy and Donny Akers.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 11, 2016, from 5 – 8 pm, at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, Ohio 44001. Funeral services will also be held at the funeral home, on Tuesday, at 11:00 am. Rev. Larry Newsom will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
