Irene B. Fry's Obituary
Irene B. Fry (nee Szakats), age 94, of Sheffield Village passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Avon Place Nursing Home in Avon.
She was born on November 26, 1920 in Lorain, Ohio to Julius and Mary Szakats. Irene made her career as a beautician and was the owner of Mar-Nel’s Beauty Salon and she also served as a waitress at McGarvey’s Restaurant and the Aquamarine Restaurant in Avon Lake. She enjoyed volunteering her time at the Lorain Senior Center and selling flowers for the American Cancer Society for over 25 years.
Knitting, crocheting, sewing, and gardening were a few of the talents that Irene had. She also enjoyed baking and cooking her heritages authentic Hungarian dishes. Irene and her husband, Robert, loved to travel. Their travels took them extensively through Europe, including their many trips to the Oktoberfest, and to Russia, Africa, Hawaii, California, Florida and the Caribbean Islands. They also made several RV trips through the Western United States. In their later years they enjoyed taking bus trips to all the casinos.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Renee, of Sheffield Village; son, Richard, of Amherst; granddaughter, Nicole (Pat) Mackin, of Florida; grandson, Peter, of Amherst; great-granddaughters, Carol Ann and Taylor Mackin, of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Robert, in October of 2011; brothers Julius (Julia) Szakats, Joseph (Ann) Szakats, and Andrew (Helen) Szakats; sisters, Mary Jane Kalinowski and Mary Rose.
The Fry family will receive friends on Friday, September 4, 2015 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst where closing prayers will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 9:45 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain. Rev. Fr. John Retar, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
