Irene Ella Smith's Obituary
Irene Ella Smith passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on September 21, 2021. She resided at The Gardens of French Creek in Avon, Ohio.
Irene was born on October 2, 1924 in Lorain, Ohio. Her parents were James Major and Sofi Orosz Major. She graduated from Brookside High School, Class of 1942. Irene was a devoted homemaker. In her younger years, she was employed at the Greyhound Bus Lines in Cleveland, Ohio. Irene was a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain.
Irene married Don Smith on January 10, 1948 and they resided in Lorain for 67 years. Don and Irene vacationed throughout the country and enjoyed golf outings to Georgia, and Florida. She was a wonderful hostess, renown for her great cooking including outstanding strawberry pies and famous sauerkraut balls. Irene liked to entertain friends and family with stuffed cabbage and corned beef meals at the holidays.
Besides her parents, Irene is predeceased by her husband, Don, bothers, Joseph Sallay, James Sallay, and Louis Sallay and sisters, Wilma Fogel Stone, Sophie Rieth, and Elizabeth Wolfe Miles.
Irene is survived by son Donald W Smith of Bowling Green, OH; daughter Doreen Smith of North Ridgeville, OH and daughter-in-law, Michelle Ede Smith of Bowling Green. Grandchildren include Kelsey and Sam Harrington of Bay Village, OH; Jackie Ala of North Ridgeville, OH and Matthew Smith and Erica Meurk of Seattle, WA. Simon Aloysius Smith-Meurk is Irene’s great-grandson. Irene had many nephews and nieces.
A remembrance service will be held at Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral Center at 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road in Amherst, Ohio. Friends will be received on Saturday, September 25, 2021, from 11:00 am until the time of her memorial service at noon. Rev. Peter Toth, Pastor of Hungarian Reformed Church, will officiate. Guests are strongly encouraged to wear facial coverings and to social distance. Private burial will be held at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst, at a later date.
Irene was dearly loved and will be missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, donations are directed to the Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain at 1691 E 31st Street, Lorain, Ohio 44055.
