He was born on January 6, 1937 in Ahoskie, NC. James dedicated much of his life to serving his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He entered active duty in 1954 and honorably served three tours during the Vietnam War. After 23 years of service, he was honorably discharged in 1977. His commitment to service continued as he embarked on a career in Civil Service in Honolulu, where he worked until his well-earned retirement in 2003.
While living in Honolulu, James furthered his education and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Chaminade University. He later moved to Amherst in 2019 with his beloved wife.
Beyond his professional and military life, James was an avid bowler and a proud member of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). He also found joy in volunteering, particularly at Martin Luther King Day parades. A fan of games of chance, he enjoyed visiting local casinos and making trips to Las Vegas to try his luck at the slot machines. However, one of his greatest passions was supporting his son in sports, cheering him on for many years, up until just a few months ago. He even took on the role of a little league baseball coach, sharing his love for the game with young athletes. James also found joy in collecting numerous pieces of African art.
