James S. Polen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away surrounded by his family at his home on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the age of 76, under the compassionate care of Suncrest Hospice. Born on September 10, 1947, in Elyria, Ohio, to Samuel and Eleanor (nee Patak) Polen, Jim led a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to family.
A proud alumnus of Elyria Catholic High School, Jim graduated in 1965, earning the prestigious Lou Rotunda Award in his senior year, a testament to his exceptional character and athletic prowess. His talent on the football field secured him a scholarship to Ohio University, making him one of the first Elyria Catholic graduates to receive a full athletic scholarship. At Ohio University, Jim was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and graduated in 1969.
Jim's professional journey saw him retiring from MT Business Technologies in 2014, after which he continued to contribute part-time at R. B. Industrial. His passion for sports extended beyond his own achievements, as he cherished coaching his sons during their youth and enjoyed countless weekends golfing with them, friends, and other family members. He also enjoyed bowling and especially traveling with his cherished wife, Sue, which were among his favorite pastimes.
Known for his great sense of humor, Jim had a knack for making others laugh and took delight in playful pranks. Above all, his greatest joy was his family. He treasured every moment spent with them, especially attending the numerous sporting events of his grandchildren, whose accomplishments filled him with pride.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Sue (nee Danicki) Polen; his children, Jeff (Melissa) Polen, Tim Polen, Rob (Sharon) Bennett, and Gina (Bryan) Camp; his grandchildren, John, Nick, Tyler, Alex, Lauren, Baylie, Haleigh, and C.J.; great- grandson, Theo; his sisters, Carol (Dave) Malone and Patty (Geoff) Smith; and his brother, Don (Patti) Polen.
