Jeanette Steele's Obituary
Jeanette Steele (nee Van Housen), age 76, of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Mercy New Life Hospice Center in Lorain losing a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born July 19, 1938 in Las Vegas, New Mexico to the late Agnes and Howard Van Housen.
In 1958, Jan married the love of her life, Blake Steele while he was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas. After moving to Ohio, she worked at Presti’s and Gordon’s Hardware in Oberlin, Fanny Farmers Candy Factory, Norwalk, Lil Bit Country Tack Shop, Sandusky and Jan’s Shoppe in Wakeman. Then moving to Amherst, she and Blake made and sold wooden crafts at craft shows. She loved baking, cake decorating, casino gambling, holidays, raising and showing Arabian horses and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Blake; her children, Lynette (Steven) Barr, Cheryl (Mark) Costilow, and Michael (Becky) Steele; her grandchildren, Luke, Audrey, Kristina, Mallary and Samantha; 6 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Patty (James) Anderton, Beatrice (Steve) Adams and her brother, Gary (Liz) Blackwell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by beloved grandmother Jenny “Moco” Wegley.
The family invites friends to join them at a memorial gathering to celebrate Jan’s life on Friday, August 29th from 6-8 p.m. in the Gathering Center of the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd, Amherst.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Mercy New Life Hospice, 3500 Kolbe Rd, Lorain, Ohio 44053 or to the Amherst Special Olympics.
