Jerry L. McKillip's Obituary
Gerald “Jerry” McKillip, age 62, of Lorain, Ohio passed away on Friday, October 6, 2017 at his home under the care of Mercy New Life Hospice.
He was born on February 4, 1955 in Lorain to Leonard and Irene (nee Cross) McKillip and graduated from Admiral King High School in 1973. Jerry made his career as a Boilermaker for the Boilermakers Union Local 744 in Cleveland, Ohio retiring in February of 2010 after 36 years of service.
Jerry was a lifelong member of the Church of St. Peter, Lorain, Fraternal Order of Elks in Lorain for 31 years, Knights of Columbus Council 637 for 37 years, Local Order of Moose Lodge 1933 in Englewood, FL, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Englewood, FL and Amherst, OH. He was a previous member of the Lorain Bowling Association for 5 years.
After retirement Jerry volunteered at Mercy Hospital. Jerry enjoyed bowling a hobby that he began in high school and continued to enjoy throughout his adult life. He was a youth bowling coach for 17 years at Rebman’s Recreation Bowling Alley and along with his wife ran the Knights of St. John Youth League for 4 years. He bowled on various leagues over the years. Jerry was also a longtime golfer on the Elks Golf League and for many years golfed in the yearly State Golf Tournaments at various locations throughout the State. In addition to bowling and golf, Jerry enjoyed seasonal RV Camping. For the past 7 years had been at Willow Bend Resort in Danbury Twp., Port Clinton.
Jerry likes to make things and always had a project going on. Most of his friends can look around their homes and find something “handmade” by Jerry that he had given to them. He enjoyed walking trails with his wife at various Metro Parks or in different locations that they came across in Ohio and Florida. He loved “wintering” at Brook to Bay, in Englewood, Florida and helping out with the many projects that were going on around the mobile home park. Above all, Jerry loved being with his wife and daughters.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet (nee Davidson); daughters, Mindy and Lindsey, both of Lorain; sister, Susan (Roman) Sapecki; niece, Chloe (Joshua) Christ; nephews. Ian Specki, John (Kelly) Davidson, and Matthew (Julie) Davidson; and 6 great nieces and nephews.
As an adult Jerry gained a loving step-family. Step-mother, Donna; step-sisters, Kim Torres-Schrull, Victoria Sessa, Tina Brown, and Michelle Berry; step-brother, Tim Torres; and 7 step nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard McKillip, in 2007; mother, Irene (nee Cross) McKillip, in 1981; and brother. Thomas McKillip, in 1969.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 9, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 10th. at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral center followed by interment at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. Services will be conducted by family friend, Deacon Robert Dybo of Nativity BVM Catholic Church. (Per Jerry’s request , Please dress casual).
