Joanne C. Huya's Obituary
Joanne Carolyn Huya (nee Hopwood), age 80, of Lorain, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021 after a short illness. Her beloved son, daughter, sister and extended family were all by her side.
She was born on November 13, 1940 in Cleveland, OH, to Edward John and Margaret Elizabeth (nee Williams) Hopwood. She was a lifelong resident of Lorain, except for a few months when she lived in Amherst and is a 1959 graduate of Lorain High School. For almost 30 years she was employed at Lakeland Enterprises as an Administrative Assistant before retiring in 2008. Joanne was a devoted member of The Catholic Church of St. Peter, where she was a Eucharistic minister.
Joanne was a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi since November of 1971. She was president of the chapter and torch bearer. In her 50 years of membership, Joanne had perfect attendance and held every office at one time, including the Beta Sigma Phi Elyria City Council membership. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and watching the Cleveland Indians play. She especially loved attending all her grandkids’, and extended family, sporting events, being the biggest cheerleader there. She never missed a game.
Joanne will be dearly missed by her son, Gerald L. Huya, Jr., daughter, Gwyneth M. (Jay) Strauss, her grandchildren, Nicole (Korey) McDonald, Ashley Strauss, Brittany Huya, and Jacob Huya, her great grandson, Noah Huya, her sister, Barbara (James) Krebs and her many nieces and nephews. Joanne’s best friend for the longest time of anyone, Nancy Werley, is also left to cherish her memory. Nancy was more like a sister to her as well as an aunt to Gerald, Jr. and Gwyneth. The family is forever grateful for their mom’s very special friend, Lola Smith and her wonderful neighbors. The care that they all gave to their mother will never be forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Gerald L. Huya, Sr., in 2019 as well as her parents.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 26, 2021, from 5 – 8 pm, in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst.
