John C. Gilbert's Obituary
John C. Gilbert, age 80, of Vermilion, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2015 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, North Carolina, while visiting family there.
Born on February 28, 1935 in Rockhouse, KY to the late Thomas and Mexie Gilbert, he grew up in Lorain and attended Lorain High School.
In 1953 John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served our country for 20 years, including 3 tours of duty in Vietnam.
Following his career with the Marines, he began working as a mechanic for Yellow Freight Systems in Richfield, Ohio. He retired from there in 1997.
John was an active member of First Baptist Church in Vermilion, where he served as the treasurer of the church.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Fraternal Order of Masons Black River Lodge in Lorain, and the Teamsters Local 964. In his free time, John enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, to whom he would have been married 58 years this November, Ann (nee Blue); his daughters, Phyllis (Jerry) Kyle, and Patricia (Paul) Strama, both of Vermilion; his grandchildren, Alexandria and Samantha Kyle and Amber, Lewis, Austin, and Mary Strama; his brother, Thomas (Nancy) Gilbert, of Lorain and his sister, Marlene Hogarth, of Melbourne, FL.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. A Masonic Service will be conducted that evening in the funeral center at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 6716 W. River Rd, Vermilion. Rev. Nile Hill, Pastor, and Rev. Jerry Anderson, of Kentucky, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park. Full military honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in his memory to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 158, Vermilion, OH 44089.
