John Charles Jaworski Jr.'s Obituary
John C. Jaworski Jr. age 91, of Amherst, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at O’Neill Healthcare Center in Bay Village.
John was born in Lorain, Ohio on June 4, 1925 to Sophia (nee Bash) and John Jaworski Sr. (the former Mayor of the City of Lorain from 1952-1962). John graduated from Lorain High School with the Class of 1943 B.
John served our Country in WWII from 1943-1946 in the United States Navy and held the title of the Navy Motor Machinist’s Mate, Third Class V6.
He retired from Finast, Pick-n-Pay Grocery Store as the Meat Manager in1987 after 30 years of service.
John proudly served his community in politics for over 50 years, starting in Amherst in 1962 as a councilman-at-large for 2 terms, moving to President of Council for 4 terms and the Mayor of Amherst from 1984-1995.
John passionately held the position as the Chairman of Amherst Democrat Precinct Committee. He was also the chairman of Amherst City Democrat Central Committee. He proudly held the position as the Chairman of the Amherst Democratic Prescient Committee for over 20 years. He also held a membership with the Lorain County Democrat Executive Committee.
John volunteered at the Lorain County Board of Elections until the time of his passing.
During his life, John was a member of the Amherst American Legion, AMVETS, Amherst VFW, and the Amherst Fraternal Order of Eagles, Amherst St. Joseph’s Men’s Club, and the Senior Fellowship of Lorain.
John was dearly loved by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time watching their soccer, baseball, and basketball games along with picking them up from school.
Everyone who knew John would beep and wave to him passing by his home since he spent much of his free time mowing the lawn and tending to his flowers. Both friends and family enjoyed the tomatoes he would give as gifts from his garden each year.
John is preceded in death by his wife Helen (nee Sakowski), in 2014; his parents, Sophie (Bash) and John Sr.; siblings, Herman ( Lelia); Ralph (Angie); Daniel , Joseph, Jerome Jaworski, Dorothy (John) Turton, Veronica (Joe) Unger; and brother in law, Neil Swartz.
John is survived by his daughters, Kathleen (Jim) Gragel, of Sagamore Hills, and Cynthia (Tim) Manning, of Amherst; grandchildren, Jason (Stephanie) Rothman, Jackie(Jamie) Rothman, Todd (Elisha) Rothman, Matthew Poprocki, Stephen (Hyeri) Poprocki, and Gretchen (Garrett) Miller; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Ryan, and Lilly Rothman, and Reaghan Miller; sister, Rita Swartz, brothers, Richard (Rita) Jaworski, and Robert (Florence) Jaworski; and sisters-in-law, Donna, Elizabeth, and Sylvia Jaworski.
The Jaworski family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Closing prayers will be held in the Funeral Center on Wednesday, March 29th. at 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
