John Konnerth's Obituary
John Konnerth, age 95, formerly of Lorain and recently of Amherst, died on Friday, September 10, 2010 at home while under the care of New Life Hospice.
He was born on July 5, 1915 in Transylvania, Romania to the late Paul and Katarina Konnerth. He served in the Romanian Army during World War II.
During the 1950’s, John came to America. He lived most of his life in Lorain, with his recent years spent in Amherst with his daughter and son-in-law.
A shoemaker by trade, he owned and operated John’s Shoe Repair in Lorain. He spent many years making and fixing shoes with the skill he learned in his home land. He also worked as a millwright helper at US Steel for over 28 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lorain, the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons and the Lieder Taffel Club. He spent his free time gardening and reading.
He is survived by his children, Heidi (Bill) Fleming, of Amherst, Hans (Diane) Konnerth, of Amherst, Monica (Stan, deceased) Cinniger, of Lorain and Reinhart (Ann) Konnerth, of Vermilion; his grandchildren, Crystal, Joseph, and Kelsey Fleming, Lisa and Hans Konnerth, Robert, Marleen and Edwin Cinniger, and Shawn and Michael Konnerth; his great-grandchildren, Kaleigh, Brooke, Evan, Madison, Carson, Landon, JoLynn, Malorie, William, Jonathon and Myles; and 1 sister of Romania.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freida (nee Schaller) on August 6, 2008.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 2-6 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Funeral services will be on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral center with Rev. Philip Kunz, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
