Joseph “Papa Joe” Schulin, age 81, of Lorain, died on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at New Life Hospice Residential Center, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on May 3, 1928 in Yugoslavia. At the age of 14, he moved to Germany and was drafted into the German Army. Following his time in the Army, he continued to live in Germany until coming to America in 1952. He made Lorain his home since then.
He served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War as an ambulance driver.
Many people will remember Papa Joe from his time spent working at Avonti’s Bakery, his son’s business, for over 20 years. A cook and a baker, he was known for his chicken paprikash, dockside stew and stuffed cabbage. He also worked many years for DeLuca’s. Prior to that, he worked at Thew Shovel as a painter and Lake Terminal Rail Road repairing the train cars.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Lorain. He also belonged to the Croatian Club, Russo Slav Club, and was a lifetime member of the Italian American Veterans Post #1.
His greatest moments were the times he spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening and listening to ethnic music.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bridget (nee DeMarco); his sons, Joseph A. (Tina), of Lorain, Tim A. (Pam), of Amherst, and his daughter, Tamara (Edward) Murray, of Jackson Township, OH; 9 grandchildren, Mallory Anderson, Mackenzie Anderson, Joseff Schulin, Jordan Schulin, Terry “T.J.” Schulin, Steven Mezatasta, Cicily Murray, Eddie Murray, and Casey Murray; and one great-grandson, Ian Anderson; and brothers, Antone, Vladmir, and Carl, all of Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseff and Anna (nee Alih); his brothers, John and Stefan; and his sister, Katherine Marikovic.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 2nd from 3-7 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral center followed by funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Fr. Joseph West, O.F.M., Conv.,Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. Full military honors will be conducted by the Italian American Veterans Post 1 Honor Guard.
