Kathryn V. Stumphauzer's Obituary
Kathryn “Katy” V. Stumphauzer, age 95 of Sheffield Twp. passed away Saturday, September 21, 2013 at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born on May 15, 1918 in Painesville, Ohio and moved to Lorain in 1925. Katy was a 1936 graduate of Clearview High School. In 1938 she moved to Avon, Ohio and in 1955 moved to Sheffield Twp. where she resided the remainder of her life.
Katy was the co-founder of numerous successful business ventures, including Ridgeview IGA Supermarket, Garden Basket Garden Center, Riveredge Racquetball Club and the Riveredge Subdivision. She was a founding and active member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church and a member of both the Altar and Rosary Society and St. Francis of Assisi Women’s Circle of the church.
Gardening, reading, floral arranging and writing poetry was how she enjoyed spending her free time. Her family was her passion in life and what brought her the most joy. Her family referred to her as their “Prayer Warrior” for all the prayers that she would say for them.
Katy is survived by her children; Evelyn (Kim) Packard, of Naples, Florida, William “Bill” (Veronica) Stumphauzer, of Avon, Kenneth “Ken” (Gail) Stumphauzer, of Sheffield Lake and Kathryn (Thomas) Solak, of Sheffield Twp.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1980; her granddaughter, Margeau, in 2011; her parents, Steven and Rosalie Horvath; and several brothers and sisters, including, Helen Bakos, Ann Karman, Steve Horvath and Rose Puskas.
The Stumphauzer family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. The Altar and Rosary Society of St. Vincent De Paul will conduct a Rosary Service at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Closing Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 in the Funeral Center followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria. Rev. Fr. Donald Dunson, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
The family suggest contributions be made in memory of Katie to the Margeau Free to Be Project, 14240 Baird Rd., Oberlin, Ohio 44074, in honor of her granddaughter, Margeau.
