Kay Allene Chet (née Hawley), 86, of Lorain, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026.
Born on July 7, 1940, in Lorain, Ohio, Kay devoted her life to faith, family, and serving others. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, G. Jack Chet, who passed away on February 25, 2001. Together they shared a lifetime of love and partnership, building a home centered on Christian faith, unconditional love, and family. Their greatest accomplishment was not measured by possessions or achievements, but by the family they raised and the values they passed on
.
Kay’s greatest calling was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She devoted herself to creating a loving home where faith, family, and caring for others were always the highest priorities. With a lifelong interest in nutrition and healthy living, she took great care in planning wholesome meals that nourished both body and family. As her children grew older, she worked at a local bank to help provide for their education and future. Everything she did reflected her selfless nature and her unwavering love for her family.
Faith was the foundation of Kay’s life. Raised in the church, she carried those beliefs with her every day and passed them on to her children, not only through her words, but by the quiet example she lived. She was a faithful member of St. John’s United Church of Christ for more than sixty years, where her faith was strengthened through worship, fellowship, and service. Her compassion, humility, and unwavering trust in God touched everyone who knew her.
Friends often said Kay was the nicest person they had ever met. She never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Selfless by nature, she consistently placed the needs of others before her own, offering encouragement, generosity, and unconditional love without expecting anything in return. Her gentle spirit made everyone around her feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
Nothing brought Kay greater joy than her family. She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren—not simply for their accomplishments, but for the character, integrity, kindness, and faith they demonstrated throughout their lives. She believed that success was measured by the kind of person you became, and she found great joy in seeing those values reflected in the family she and Jack raised.
Kay and Jack were true partners in every sense of the word. Together they created a home where faith came first, family was everything, and every child and grandchild knew they were deeply loved. Whether gathered around the dinner table, enjoying family vacations, or celebrating the holidays, they found their greatest happiness not in what they had, but in simply being together. Their love for one another became the foundation upon which our family continues to stand today.
One of the family’s most treasured traditions was the annual trip to Cedar Point. Some of the earliest and happiest memories shared by their children were those vacations together—two children walking hand in hand while two more rode in strollers, with Kay and Jack making every moment special. Those simple family outings became lifelong memories and perfectly reflected what mattered most to them: spending time together as a family.
Christmas was the heart of the Chet family. Rooted in their deep Christian faith, it was far more than a holiday—it was a celebration of the birth of Christ, family, and love. From Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day, Jack was at his happiest, filling the home with lights, decorations, excitement, and the joy of giving. Kay would smile and jokingly say, “We’ll be paying off Christmas until June,” but she wouldn’t have had it any other way. She knew the presents would eventually be forgotten, but the memories made together would last forever. Those Christmases became one of the greatest gifts she and Jack gave their family, and they remain treasured memories for their children and grandchildren today.
Kay is survived by her loving children, Randall, (Cathey Chet),Valerie (Marty Orlandi, Eric (Rae Chet) and Cindy (Brian Toth) ; her cherished grandchildren, Alyssa, Ryan, Carson, Kennedy, Brady, Evan, Jaden, and Logan; her beloved sisters, Patricia Ruble and Marianne Shoemaker; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who were blessed by her kindness.
Perhaps Kay’s greatest accomplishment was not found in anything she achieved for herself, but in the lives she helped shape. The kindness, faith, integrity, compassion, and strength that define her children and grandchildren are a reflection of the values she lived every day. She never sought recognition for her sacrifices or the countless acts of love she quietly gave, yet they became the foundation upon which her family was built.
Her legacy is found in the family she nurtured, the faith she lived, and the example she set every day. Through her quiet strength, gentle heart, and unwavering love, she showed that a life devoted to others is a life well lived. Though she will be deeply missed, her influence continues in every act of kindness, every family gathering, every Christmas celebration, and in every generation that follows. The love she and Jack shared remains the enduring foundation of the family they cherished above all else.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 12:00 P.M. at Dovin and Reber Jones with service at 2:00 followed by procession to Elmwood Cemetery.
