Kenneth L. Mason's Obituary
Kenneth Mason, 91, of Lorain, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake, Ohio. Born on December 2, 1933, in Lorain to Joseph and Helen (nee Molnar) Mason, Kenneth lived a life dedicated to service, family, and his community.
Kenneth graduated from Lorain High School in 1951. After beginning his career with the B&O Railroad, he enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving aboard the U.S.S. Sunbird until his honorable discharge on May 2, 1956. He continued his commitment to his country through service in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1958 to 1962.
In 1960, Kenneth joined the Lorain Police Department, where he served as an officer for 30 years until his retirement in 1990. During his time on the force, he furthered his education at Lorain County Community College. Kenneth was known for his dedication to his profession and his community, earning the respect of his peers and those he served.
Kenneth was an active and lifetime member of the AMVETS, American Legion Post #30, and the VFW, where he served as Chaplain and participated in the funeral honor guard detail, providing military honors to veterans who had passed. He was deeply passionate about honoring the sacrifices of his fellow servicemen and women.
An avid boater and fisherman, Kenneth cherished his time on Lake Erie, creating countless memories with family and friends. He was also a loyal supporter of Cleveland’s professional sports teams, especially the Indians and Browns. Riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle was another source of joy, and his quick wit and knack for telling a good joke will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Nancy (nee Petrosky); his son, Greg Mason; grandchildren Jessica (Jim) Snyderburn, Tim Mason, Nick Mason, Shaun Mason, Katherine Mason, and Amanda Mason; and great-grandchildren Abby and Ethan Snyderburn. He was preceded in death by his son, David Mason; his parents, Joseph and Helen Mason; and his brothers, Ernie, Robert, Jack, and Richard Mason.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 18, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. A closing prayer will be held at the funeral center on Thursday, December 19, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Parish, 3655 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. Reverend Father Craig Hovanec, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
Kenneth’s legacy of service, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
