Maria Asimou's Obituary
Maria Asimou, age 94, of Amherst passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023. She was born on May 6, 1929 in Domvrena, Greece to Nicholas and Maro (nee Bardosa) Kountouriotis. Maria and her husband, James, and daughter, Maria, emigrated from Greece to the United States in 1963.
Maria was a talented seamstress and continued to work well into her eighties tailoring clothes for dear friends and family. She was a long-time member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. For many years, Maria made the holy bread for the church and worked tirelessly at the church’s festivals.
Maria enjoyed her neighbors, working in the yard and cooking for those she loved. She loved her entire family and took great joy in spending time with all of them.
She is survived by her daughter, Maria (Bill) Jaecklein, of Massachusetts; grandchildren James Jaecklein and Eleni (Richard) Rogers; sisters-in-law, Mary Paterakis and Cathy Theodore; brothers-in-law Tom (Helen) Asimou and John (Helen) Asimou; and many nieces and nephew.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years James; her parents, Nicholas and Maro; brothers George and John, sisters Eleni Kountouriotou and Dina Karkani; brothers-in-law Bill Theodore, Gus Paterakis and Panayiotis Karkani; and sisters-in-law Toula Kountouriotou and Koula Kountouriotou.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 9:30-10:30 am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain, Ohio. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation and will be officiated by Fr. Christopher Zaferes. Interment will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made in memory of Maria to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
