Dr. Martin Joseph Bukowski's Obituary
Dr. Martin Joseph Bukowski passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2021 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Martin was born March 19, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from LaSalle College, he received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He did his internship at St. Vincent Hospital in New York City. After serving as a Navy doctor at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba he married Winifred Ryan, a Navy nurse.
He returned to Philadelphia for his residency in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia where he worked with future Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.
He moved with his family to Media, Pennsylvania where he started to practice at the Media Clinic. After many years at the clinic, he continued his practice in Haverford, Pennsylvania.
He became Dr. Joseph Cicerella’s partner at Lorain Pediatric Associates in Lorain, Ohio, his wife’s hometown. After Dr. Cicerella’s retirement he continued the practice until his own retirement in 1996.
He remained on the Ethics Committee at Lorain Community Hospital. He was also an advisor on the Nickle Foundation which provides funds for children’s families in need.
He enjoyed several years of retirement until health issues became a problem in his late seventies and early eighties. He received a pacemaker and defeated cancer, but Parkinson’s Disease progressed for the rest of his life.
Martin is survived by his children, Maryann (Phillip) Van Roden, Bill (Michele) Bukowski, Joe Bukowski, and Mary K. (Jeff Zych) Bukowski; granddaughter, Taylor Van Roden; and grandson, Daniel Van Roden.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred (nee Ryan) Bukowski; parents, Martin and Sophie Bukowski; and sister, Rita.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic to family chose to have private funeral services. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lorain.
