Mary Hanna's Obituary
Mary Rose Hanna (nee Ellis), the daughter of the late Hungarian immigrants Bert and Elizabeth (nee Bodnar) Ellis was born in Lorain on November 27, 1928.
She entered eternal life on Monday, October 11, 2010 at St. John West Shore Hospital at the age of 81.
Mary Rose attended Lorain High School. During World War II, she worked at General Industries in Elyria from 1944-1946 where she made bomb fuses under the supervision of U.S. Navy inspectors. During the war, Mary Rose also worked part-time at Irene’s Dress Shop in Lorain. After she was married, she worked for five years at Wakefield Lighting in Vermilion.
Mary Rose was a member of the former St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Lorain and after it closed, she became a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church. She was a member of the American Hungarian Citizens Club and the American Lebanese Syrian Club in Lorain. She volunteered for many years at the Lorain Senior Center where she was a receptionist and scheduled activities and transportation service for senior citizens. She was also active for many years in the Women’s Democratic Club in Lorain.
Her pastimes included flower gardening, interior decorating and dancing; a hobby she shared with her husband for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Elias Hanna, Sr.; her sons, James Elias Hanna, Jr. (Nancy) of South Carolina, Thomas Michael Hanna (Kimberly), of Akron, and Daniel Mark Hanna (Anita), of Lorain and her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hanna, of Bowling Green, Ohio; 3 granddaughters, Katherine McDonald (Ryan), Brittany Beko, and Alyse Hanna; 2 step-granddaughters, Shannon Holtmann and Brianna Roberts; and her 2 great-granddaughters, Taylor Seaholm and Kayla McDonald.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Richard Ellis Hanna in 1985, her brother Bert Ellis, Jr. and her sisters Elizabeth Ellis and Helen Ellis.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 14, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst, where a Parastas will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Panachida will be held on Friday, October 15th at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral center followed by Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 2711 West 40th St., Lorain. Fr. Nicholas Rachford, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
