Mary Jo Hooven's Obituary
Mary Jo Hooven (nee Harris), age 89, of Sheffield Lake, passed away at her home on Monday, February 1, 2021. She was born on March 1, 1931 in Lorain, graduating from Lorain High School with the class of 1949. That is where she met the love of her life, Richard Hooven and they were married for 64 years. Mary Jo was the daughter of E. Ben and Nellie (nee Borthwick) Harris.
Mary Jo was a member of First Congregational Church for 72 years. She was a Sunday school teacher, member of Circle 7, Girl Scout leader, and Cub Scout Troop, and volunteered at Lorain Community Hospital. She was employed at Smith & Gerhart, Citizens Bank, and Ted Jacobs.
She and her husband moved to New Smyrna Beach in 1989, enjoying many visitors from Ohio and England and took many trips in the south. In New Smyrna Beach, she volunteered at the public library, the visitor center, and the church resale shop. They were members of the Coronado Church in NSB. Dick enjoyed being a real estate agent and being president of their condo association before they settled into their home.
She moved back to Lorain in 2017 and became a member of the Lorain Historical Society.
Mary Jo is survived by her son, Richard (Gina) Hooven, of Lorain, granddaughter, Angela, daughter, Peggy Lee Hooven, of Chantilly, VA, 2 special nieces; Jane Hunker and Pam Llewellyn, her sister, Kathy Lee Bateman, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, in 2012, Richard, who was a retired Lorain firefighter. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and 2 sisters; Evelyn Llewellyn and Sally Kordelski.
