Mary Shinsky's Obituary
Mary Shinsky (nee Mihalic), 93 years of age, departed this world on January 9, 2021. She went to heaven where she is now whole and happy in the presence of God. She died from COVID-19 after testing positive on December 31, 2020. Born and raised in Lorain, Ohio, she lived most of her adult life in Amherst, OH. She resided in a memory unit for the past three years due to her progressing Alzheimer’s disease.
Mary had an infectious laugh that would get the whole room laughing. She had a joyful spirit about her. She loved walking and the Amherst Beaver Creek Reservation was her favorite place to take a daily walk. Even in her days at the memory unit, Mary was a tireless walker, always making the staff smile.
Mary was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She managed the bookkeeping for her husband’s business, Shinsky Builders. She was very involved in her daughters’ sports as a coach and supportive fan. Her children’s schooling was very important to her and she was very active at their school. An avid golfer and bowler, she played in various leagues. She was always making a double batch of cookies for the family and enjoyed working in her yard. She loved to play Canasta with her sisters, especially when she won. Traveling was always an adventure with her family. She never made it to Croatia where her parents were born.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Norbert (2112); infant son John; siblings, Barbara Stuller, Diane, George, Helen, John, Bobby (age 4), and infant Margaret.
Survivors include her 100-year-old sister, Hilda, of Lorain; children, Janet (Bob) Runner, of Sandusky, Carol (Dan Bullock) Shinsky, of Lorain, Gail Shinsky, of Lorain, Norman (Sandi) Shinsky, of Lorain, and Mandy (Tony) Smith, of Aiken, SC; eight grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
