Michael Stavole's Obituary
Michael Stavole, age 91, a resident of Amherst for the past 40 years, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Elmcroft of Lorain.
Michael was born on November 1, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Joseph and Jennie (nee Scavuzza) Stavole. He attended John Marshall High School, Cleveland, Ohio and was drafted in January 1944 prior to graduation. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a hospital corpsman in Boca Chica, Florida. He was honorably discharged in June 1946. He attended Miami University, receiving his bachelor’s degree in education. At Miami, he was an All-American runner and led his team to several MAC championships. He was voted into the Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
He was a passionate educator who retired from Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools in 1984. He received the distinguished service award from Ohio DECA in 2004. He was a track and field official for 50 years. He was a lifelong learner who was an avid reader and enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians.
Michael is survived by sons, Joseph of Amherst, and Jonathan of Minneapolis, MN; a daughter, Jill (Shane) Karnes of Marysville, Ohio; grandchildren, Jarrett, Tristan, and Riley Karnes; brother in law, Vaughn (Elaine) Campbell of Lake Wales, Florida; nieces Janet Stavole of Kent and Roberta Stavole of Cuyahoga Falls; a nephew, James Stavole of Cuyahoga Falls. Michael was preceded in death by his wife, Viola in 2010, parents, Joseph and Jennie Stavole; a brother Frank in 1974; and his Uncle Tom Sargous in 1977.
The Stavole family will receive friends on Friday, January 20, 2017 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 21st. at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral center, officiated by Rev. Lynn Pease, followed by entombment at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
