Miguel Eugenio Saez's Obituary
Miguel Eugenio Saez passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 29th, 2023, in Palm Bay, Florida.He was 94 years young.
Miguel was a resident of Lorain until retirement. After retirement he moved to Palm Bay, Florida, escaping the cold Ohio Winters.Born in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, to the late Santos and Evangelista, Miguel was the youngest of 14 children.
Miguel grew up in "el campo" of Puerto Rico working on his family farm and attending school. His agricultural roots never left him. Each spring he would plant his garden and continued the tradition until his death.
He came to Lorain in 1947 following an older brother seeking employment.Miguel worked agricultural jobs around Lorain prior to joining Fruehauf Trailer Company. In 1950, he was drafted into the United States Army and returned to Puerto Rico to begin his military duty. He served three years active duty which included 13 months in Korea assigned to the 65th Infantry Regiment-- Los Borinqueneers, the highly decorated Puerto Rican battalion. He is a decorated combat veteran awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.Upon completion of his military service in Puerto Rico, Miguel returned to Lorain with his first wife Lida Melendez and their two children. He resumed work with Fruehauf Trailer Company and worked 19 years until Fruehauf closed its doors. He then began working for the City of Lorain Parks Department, retiring after 30 years of service. During his service, he was caretaker for the Rose Garden at Lake View Park. The Rose Garden was his passion, caring for and nurturing it as if it were his own. He was proud of being able to tend to the garden and bring its beauty, joy and memories to all those who visited. A picture of him in "his garden" made the front page of the Lorain Journal. Miguel also had a record store business on Pearl Avenue in the 1970's.
Miguel was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters and his second wife Carmen of 54 years, who passed in 2021 after a lengthy illness.
He and Carmen lived on 11th Street where they raised their two daughters.
Miguel is survived by six children, Edith (John) Jachym, Eugene (Kate) Saez, Mirian (Julian) Saez, Lyda (Miguel) Pabon, Sadie Saez, Lillian Saez. He is blessed with six grandchildren, Marissa (Bill), Jonathan (Ryan), Ian, Britney, Briana and Steve. Blessings continued with five great grandchildren, Armani, Noelani and Idris Miguel, John Miguel and Rowan Regan.
Funeral services will be held June 10th at Dovin-Reber Jones Funeral Home 10:00 AM and burial to follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Cemetery.
