Norwood R. Bartlome's Obituary
Norwood R. Bartlome, 87, of Amherst, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015 surrounded by his caring family. Nord is survived by Mary (nee Seroka), his loving and cherished wife of 66 ½ years. Nord and Mary were childhood sweethearts and married in 1949. He is also survived by his four daughters; Nordeen (Allen) Teasel of Michigan, Denise (Bill) Bringman of Amherst, Debra (Gary) Teaman of Avon, and Dawn (Jerome) Schrenk of Vermilion along with 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; his sister, Maxine Toth; and brothers, Leroy and Wayne. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel (Towne) and John Bartlome, his brother, Russell, and sisters, Evelyn and Elaine.
Nord was born in Amherst in November 19, 1928 and graduated from Amherst High School in 1947, where he was a decorated athlete and State Champion in pole vaulting. He remained an avid fisherman (awarded a Fish Ohio), and athlete throughout his life, competitive in bowling (300 game), slow-pitch softball (pitched a perfect game), and golfing (hit a hole-in-one). His sense of humor will be missed and is the subject of many family conversations. One of his favorite traditions was frying Lake Erie perch he caught throughout the year for his family on Christmas Eve. Following high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, obtaining the rank of corporal, and served in the Korean War from 1952-54. Nord retired from Clem Rice, Incorporated of Amherst in 1989 where he worked on many construction projects in the community and was a member of Laborers Local Union 758. He was a long time member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain until its closing and then St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Vermilion. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, watching sports of any kind, traveling to casinos, and playing poker at various fundraisers in the community.
Nord’s family would like to thank Amherst Manor staff for their compassionate care in the last days of Nord’s fulfilled life.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park, Amherst.
