Ray Damron, 86, passed away on September 6, 2023, following a brief stay in hospice care. He was born in Matewan, West Virginia on March 23, 1937, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Damron. His sister Jesse and brother Earl preceded him in death.
Ray attended Matewan High School, where he excelled in football, setting school records. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 serving overseas in Germany. He married the love of his life Wanda Lee Fleming in 1956 and they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in March. Residing in Lorain since 1959, they raised four children, who, along with Wanda, survive him.
Their children are Debra Crowley (Bob) of Bakersfield, CA, Timothy Damron (Sheila) of Johnson City, TN, Teresa Garcia of Lorain and Roger Damron (Ginger) of Virginia Beach, VA. He was a beloved grandfather to ten grandchildren, Ryan, Justin, Tyler, Dylan, Trevor, Nathan, Sylvia, Austin, Ben, and Jerrica who will miss him terribly, as well as six great grandchildren, Madison, Kennedy, Lincoln, Maya, Alaya and Mila and numerous nieces and nephews. The grandchildren in particular have fond memories of their times together with him, sharing meals and holidays, swimming, fishing, vacationing and just hanging out at Mill Hollow or on the back porch.
Ray worked at National Gypsum for 41 years as an electrician. After retiring, he then worked another 10 years in the Lorain County school system as maintenance support. He was well -known in the community as a Clearview High School Athletics booster. For years he was a pitcher on various softball teams throughout Lorain County, affectionately know as “Smile”. He was also an avid team bowler, a Boy Scout leader and an active member of VFW, Eagles, Amvets, and American Legion. He and Wanda greatly enjoyed listening and dancing to blue grass music following local musicians on the weekend.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Mercy New Life Hospice for the care and love they showed Ray and the entire family at the end of his life.
