Richard T. Croyle's Obituary
Richard “Dick” T. Croyle, age 88, a lifelong resident of Lorain passed away Monday, November 17, 2014.
Dick Croyle was born on July 19, 1926 in Lorain, Ohio to Helen (nee Mowery) and Hiram Patterson Croyle. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1944 and enlisted in the United States Army Air Force as a pilot trainee. He was honorably discharged on November 9, 1945. He attended Baldwin Wallace College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, in 1949.
Dick was employed by U.S. Steel- Lorain Works, spending many years in management at the Open Hearth Furnaces. He retired as Superintendent of Transportation and Services after more than 40 plus years with US Steel.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Lorain; a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 118, in Amherst, the Amherst Outdoor Life Association; and was a former President of both the Lorain and State of Ohio Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Dick enjoyed playing golf... claiming to have had “Holes-in-Ones.”, traveling with his friends to the Florida Keys; and researching the genealogy of the Croyle Family. Dick is the creator and carver of the “One Carrot Dime On Pins” and carved wooden replicas of the “Lorain Lighthouse.” He had made and gave thousands of each of these to friends, family and just about anyone he encountered.
He is survived by his children, Tom (Leslie) Croyle, of Bay Village, Dr. Terry Croyle, of Thomasville, GA, Pam Johnson, of Boston, MA, Todd (Linda) Croyle, of Hobe Sound, FL, and Holly Croyle, of Avon; grandchildren, Jack Croyle, Maggie (Jonathon) Batten, Kelsey (Ross) Manly, Susan (David) Rink, Trisha (Brett) Marinelli, Annie (Jed) Failor, Carly Croyle, Sydney Johnson, Blake Croyle and Owen Croyle; 8 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Hirt, of Lorain.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Helen Croyle; and his sisters, Joan Probst and Nancy Dalzell.
The Croyle family will receive friends on Friday, November 21, 2014 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Funeral Center. Rev. Mary Carson, Pastor of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Lorain will officiate. Interment will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. Military Honors will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Honor Guard.
