Richard Allen Markel's Obituary
Richard A. Markel, 76, of Elyria, Ohio, passed away on July 22, 2026. Born on November 12, 1949, in Lorain, Ohio, Richard was a graduate of Lorain High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from The Ohio State University and a Master's of Education and Administration from Ashland University.
Richard dedicated his career to education, teaching for Elyria City Schools until his retirement. He was a favorite teacher to many and made a lasting impact on his students. He was well known for his amazing Egyptian project at Ely Elementary. Outside the classroom, he found joy behind the camera, traveling, and baking. He cherished the tradition of family summer vacations to Daytona Beach. Richard was a loving father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving daughter Emily McChesney (Coty); stepdaughter Bianca Arocho; cherished grandchildren Brandon, Stevie, and Phillip; and many wonderful friends whose lives were enriched by his warmth, humor, and friendship.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Eva (née Picker) Markel, and his sister Carol Douglas.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 2, 2026 from 12-2 PM followed by a service at 2PM at Dovin & Reber Jones Funeral and Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, Ohio 44001.
